"Coming to Baku Was the Best Decision" – Gediminas Orelik Speaks to AzB.az
LANDAU Lions basketball player Gediminas Orelik has given an exclusive interview to AzB.az.
The experienced Lithuanian star spoke about his team's season-opening defeat, recovering from a major career injury, and his experience playing in Baku.
– You lost to Sabah in the opening game. What happened, especially in the final period? What was missing?
– I think the reason we lost is that we are still trying to find our rhythm and game identity. We didn't play many games during the preseason, so we are still getting used to each other on the court. But we will definitely improve as the season progresses.
– This is your second season with LANDAU Lions. What is the main role assigned to you by the head coach this year, and will you be the primary leader in the locker room?
– Yes, this is my second season here, and I'm really happy to be part of this team and organization. My role remains the same as last season – trying to win games, helping the team achieve victories, and supporting the development of young players. But my primary goal is to help the club win as many games as possible.
– You have played for clubs like Lietkabelis, Banvit, and Besiktas. After such a rich career, how did the LANDAU Lions option come up, and what was the main factor that brought you to Baku?
– As you know, I'm getting older. Before joining LANDAU Lions, I was considering staying in mainland Europe. But there is a lot of pressure and other factors in Europe. I decided to try something different in my career, and coming here turned out to be a great decision for me. I love our coaching staff – they are all wonderful people, and we've already become great friends. I hope we stay friends even after my playing career ends.
– In 2018, while playing for Venezia, you suffered a severe injury at the peak of your career. How difficult was it to return to a high level after that injury?
– It was extremely difficult. Not so much physically, but mentally and psychologically. I hadn't played for two and a half years, and making a comeback was hard. But I knew I could do it, and I wanted to show many people who I really was.
– You are a product of the Lithuanian basketball school and have played for all age groups of their national team. What main advice do you give to the young Azerbaijani players in your team?
– Just keep working hard, believe in yourselves, and never give up on what you want to achieve in life. Be smart, be patient, and your time will definitely come.
