“We want every game to be highly competitive and provide fans with more exciting basketball.”
Farukh Mahmudov, Vice President of the Azerbaijan Basketball Federation (ABF), said this in an interview with AzB.az.
The ABF official shared his thoughts on the new season:
“The new format of the Azerbaijan Basketball League (ABL) is an entirely new stage in the development of basketball in the country. We are starting the new season with a renewed strategy. This season, we will see a more competitive, high-quality and unified championship in the top division, with eight teams taking part.”
Mahmudov also spoke about the newly established second division:
“ABL 2 has an important place in our system. Six teams will compete in the championship, and according to the regulations, each team must have four local and one foreign player on the court. This rule in the second division is specifically aimed at giving our local basketball players more playing time. Our main goal in organizing the league is to provide local players with regular match experience.
“In general, this format gives us a strong and competitive main championship in the ABL, as well as a solid foundation in ABL 2 for developing our local basketball players.”
